The right music can add such a powerful extra level to Massage treatments - but getting it wrong can pretty much destroy things too!
However, there are lots of reasons why a client may prefer to have no music - one being that they are a professional musician.
When a client's career (and / or calling) is musical, that highly attuned part of their brain won't find the music a useful addition: it will usually become a massive distraction and, as mentioned above, potentially destroy the benefits of the treatment. Even while it's happening.
Not what we're after!
Getting comfortable working without music is an excellent skill to develop. And so is being aware of the ambient noise in your treatment room.
I'm currently working with a musician who opted to have no music but, part way through the treatment, took a moment to share how much they were appreciating the white noise of the fan which I had going.
Absolute silence is exceptionally difficult to achieve. This means with no music playing clients may be aware of noise outside your treatment room.
Perhaps that's some faint noise from the nearest road, or people walking in the corridor outside your treatment room, or the sound of the weather (whatever it happens to be doing that day!) None of these ambient noises are problematic in their own way, but some form of neutral white noise gives a gentle layer to help filter them out.
Additionally, this client was acknowledging the ease they felt in receiving the treatment. That they had been heard by me honouring our earlier agreement not having music. That they could really accept the treatment because there wasn't the distraction of music. That they felt completely safe receiving this treatment. This is important in all treatments - deep healing doesn't happen in an environment that isn't safe. However this client had opted for a NO HANDS Trauma Discharge Massage so this explicit acknowledgement of ease and safety was even more important - and created a sense of ease in me that made the rest of the treatment even more of a joy!I love how there's always more to learn within our profession - especially when it's our clients doing the teaching :)
